R2: Jasmine 3-2 Lucy, Olivia Fiechter 3-1 Sana

Jasmine Hutton (ENG) 3-2 Lucy Turmel (ENG)  11-9, 5-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5 (72m)
Olivia Fiechter (USA) 3-1 Sana Ibrahim (EGY) 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6 (43m)

An all English battle, with both players reacting loudly to what seemed like strange decisions from the official. But Lord what was a great battle to finish the night. The pace those two used was intense, looking for their targets at the back.

The second game was pretty tight, 18m, at 9/9 it’s everybody’s, but a stroke awarded to Lucy – not sure about that one to be honest – decision that really upset Jasmine, maybe causing that quick error in the next rally, 11/9 to Lucy.

To be honest, both players seemed to dominate in patches and you thought, right, Jasmine will win that, to basically change your mind about 5 rallies later. But loved the intensity, even if Jasmine seem to have the upperhand from the 4th onwards, 3/3, 8/4, 11/7 in 12m in the 4th and 7/2, 8/3, 11/5 in 11m for the last one…

Jasmine

We know each other’s game inside out, we’ve played each other since we are 11 years old and my first ever tournament, I was playing her in the final and it was – wait for it – 3/2, so this is not new, this is every single match we play is a really hard battle.

We are friends off the court but when we are on court, we are really competitive and give each other no mercy!

Really happy to get on top today, I lost last time in five and that was a big tournament, so I’m happy to not play my best actually, and still come through, managed to pull myself together at the end.

In the fifth, I’m not sure what it was but ,I had a lead, and suddenly I fell like really confident, started to get for some stuff, some things were coming off but it was more moving her into different areas of the court, and it kind of started to work. I don’t know if she got a bit tired or if I was putting her in awkward positions but I stepped up and volley on it.

Sherbini on the glass, first time playing her, whoa… You know what, I’m just going to throw everything at her, there’s not much else to say about it, it’s only my second third round here, I’m going to give it everything. I’m quite sad I’m not going to play at the Pyramids but you never know… I just want to give it everything tomorrow and see how it goes.

Olivia Fiechter:

“I feel very relieved to get through that one! It was really tight, pretty much throughout the whole match. I’ve never played her before and I know she had some really strong performances last season against the top players, so I knew I had to be ready to put in a really strong performance and play my best.

“Once I was able to find my length and slow it down, I was able to find my game and start finding my targets a bit more. I’m very happy to reach the round of 16 for the first time!”
