Day ONE at the CIB Women’s Worlds

Subramaniam, Azman, Fuller and Ho produce quartet of upsets

Malaysian youngsters Sivasangari Subramaniam and Aifa Azman produced the biggest upsets on the opening day of the event at Cairo’s Shooting Club, Subramaniam beating a top ten player for the first time as she ousted USA’s Amanda Sobhy while qualifier Azman beat 16th seed Joey Chan, both in five games.

South Africa’s Alexandra Fuller and Hong Kong’s Ho-Tze Lok also beat seeds as they beat Emily Whitlock and Mariam Metwally, and there were narrow escapes for Millie Tomlinson and Hollie Naughton as the day drew to a close.

Earlier in the day the top seven seeds all won comfortably enough, Nouran Gohar the only one to drop a game as she turned on the power to beat Low Wee Wern in four.

Defending Champion Nour El Sherbini powered on after a close opening game against Rachael Chadwick, while top seed Raneem El Welily and 3rd and 4th seeds Camille Serme and Nour El Tayeb all won in three quick games.
