Kiss of death from Jon, my PSA media Boss, who went at the end of the third to talk to Balazs… Incredible comeback from the Mexican against an up-and-coming player that we have learnt to respect and fear thanks to his last great season. Good match indeed.
Mexico Leonel Cardenas came back from match ball down to defeat Hungary’s Farkas Balazs. Farkas looked the more confident player early on and came agonisingly close to recording a first-round upset when he went 10-9 up with a 2-0 lead.
Cardenas, however, clung on desperately, finding his targets as he clawed his way back from the brink by winning game three 12-10 and then taking the next two games 11-5, 11-4.

“That was tough, Balazs is a good player and I knew it was going to be tough. I was not nervous, but aware that it was going to be a hard match so I didn’t play my best in the first games but then I started playing better.
“I calmed down a bit, tried not to be anxious. Of course, he’s a great player and was making good shots and it was hard to find a way to win but I fought and I think I played the better points.
“This was exactly what I needed, having a great match like this. I’ve been training hard and putting in work but sometimes you come to an event against a top player and don’t express yourself how you want. I hope tomorrow’s match is going to be a better one!”
