[1] Hania El Hammamy (Egy) 3-0 Nadien Elhammamy (Egy) 13-11, 12-10, 11-4 (43m)
It was a nervy start for the World #.2 against her young compatriot. Hania El Hammamy was slow out of the blocks and found herself facing four game balls. The defending champion gradually found her range, however, saving all four, as well as a fifth at 11-10 down. She then turned the tables on her opponent to take the opener 13-11.
The second game was another scratchy one for the No.2 seed, who again had to overturn a four-point deficit, this time from 9-5 down. Playing the big points well, she came through 12-10 to move within a game of the third round.
Having had to push hard for her 2-0 lead, El Hammamy enjoyed a more straightforward third game. She began to find her targets into the back of the court and stretched away in the mid-stages to close out the match and advance after 43 minutes.
Next up: a match against the USA’s Amanda Sobhy in the third round.
I think maybe I have a fierce character. I have that belief and that confidence: confidence in my character, in my game, in everything.
“Nadien is still coming up and she’s a rising star, she played incredibly well in the first two games and I had to fight through them. She’s climbing the rankings and is very attacking, so I’m sure she’s only going to get better and better.
“I played Amanda a month ago over in London. It’s always tough, it’s always tactical and I’ll need to be ready for it.”
🎙️ "This is REALLY impressive" 👏
