The 2024 CIB Egyptian Open continued today at the OWest Complex, with the second round of the first-ever PSA Diamond level event. There were another 32-match day across four courts, with the top sixteen seeds in each draw playing their opening matches.
There was a huge upset as unseeded Sana Ibrahim overcame fourth seed Nele Gilis in four tense games. Also advancing unexpectedly was qualifier Nour Heikal, who came from two games down to oust compatriot Malak Khagafy. Unseeded British trio Jasmine Hutton, Lucy Turmel and Georgia Adderley also advanced as they beat fellow unseeded Egyptian opposition.
After being promoted to 8th seed following the withdrawal of Olivia Weaver, New Zealand’s Joelle King couldn’t produce a comeback win as she lost in four to Malaysia’s Siva Subramaniam.
England’s Marwan ElShorbagy caused the only seeding upset in the men’s draw as he came from two games down to beat sixth seed Karim Abdel Gawad, while qualifier Mohamed Zakaria was 2-1 ahead and up in the fourth in the last match of the day before France’s Victor Crouin rallied to avoid the upset.
Round Three – the last sixteens – takes place over the next two days on the traditional courts and the glass court.
